The Palladium sits at the end of the main drag where the tram cars U-turn and head back up Main Street.

The turn-of-the-century building, dressed in holiday lights, looks like a picture off a Christmas card. Inside, the place is small with three old-time theaters. After paying at the vintage ticket window edged with an intricate carved-wood surround, I hook Brianna’s hand and pull her into the rightmost theater.

Refurbished iron chairs with red velvet cushions line the back of the space, but up front, antique couches and modern recliners form a wide semi-circle just the right distance from the screen.

The tingle in my chest ramps up. I’ve got to play it right tonight.

Aside from one other couple, we’re the only ones here. I pick a tapestry-covered love seat and take Brianna over. We pull off our coats, toss them over a chair arm and sit.

She shifts closer.

I take a slow breath, and with measured calm, swing my arm across the seatback and let my fingertips brush her shoulder.

A message flashes on the big screen asking viewers to silence their phones.

Brianna pulls hers out and types a message. “Just telling Dad I’m out having fun.”

“That’s good to know,” I murmur.

She chuckles as she puts her phone away, then tucks into my side.

My fingers find a corkscrew of soft black hair as I breathe in that sweet almond scent. There’s something about being around this girl that settles and exhilarates me at the same time.

The best of both worlds.
